Kyosho Jordan Yamaha 192 - GP-10 - 3274G
Radio Controlled Model

   Released by Kyosho in 1992, the Jordan Yamaha 192 GP-10 Formula 1 Racing Car - # 3274G - was based on the car driven by Stefano Modena and Maurício Gugelmin in the 1992 F1 Championship, finishing 11th in the Constructors' Championship with one single point.

   The unassembled kit came with an unpainted lexan polycarbonate Bodyshell, an OS Max-10FP-BX .10 Engine, and molded plastic Wheels with foam Tires. A Radio System, Fuel and Glow-Plug Batteries to be purchased separately.

   Now considered rare, all the early 1990s Kyosho F1 RC models are much sought after by ardent collectors the world over.

   The 2WD model is based on a two piece FRP/alloy plate chassis, front and rear double wishbone suspension with inboard coil spring over oil filled dampers (front - laydown, rear - upright), a gear type differential, anti-roll bars, dogbone drive-shafts and sintered bronze bushings, that after a short while, when dust and grit get into them, can abrade the metal shafts that spins in them. If you are building this kit to race seriously these should be replaced by steel ball bearings ASAP.

Wheel Caster Explained

   Caster is basically the angle the steering kingpins or steering pivot points, leans back in relation to the horizontal when viewed from the side of the chassis.

   To test the effectiveness of your cars caster, place your model on a flat surface, point the front wheels straight ahead, and push the chassis over to one side to simulate body roll when cornering. You will notice that as the car leans over, all four wheels also lean over in the same direction. Tires provide the most grip when the wheels are perfectly vertical and the full width of each tire is flat on the ground. Body roll pushes the wheels past the vertical and reduces the amount of tire contact. Now, if you turn the front wheels as if cornering, and again push the chassis over, you will see that in this position, the front wheels are now more vertical, giving you better ground contact and therefore improved grip.

   Another effect of caster can be seen by disconnecting your steering servo and pushing your car along the floor. Because of caster and the kingpins leaning back, your car will naturally roll straight ahead.

   Obviously, the more body roll your car induces, the more positive caster you need to counter it.

My First National

   When I first started in RC, way back in the late 1980s, I would turn up to the weekly club meeting, with my Tamiya Boomerang, Acoms transmitter, two sets of crystals, a couple of 7.2v batteries, a charger and a tool box with a wheel spanner and a few spares.
   It was three five minute qualifying rounds and a final, and every month we would have a trophy meeting. The trophies were donated by a two of the older semi professional guys who basically ran the club and over the years had collected what must have been hundreds of trophies and had no space for them anymore. The lure of a trophy always brought out the "not as enthusiastic types" and the small church function room was always packed on those nights.
   About a year in, my collection of B final trophies was beginning to clutter my room, and my dad bought me the new Tamiya Manta Ray. That was the big turning point in my RC career.
   From then on it was A finals all the way. Then one day in the summer of 1992 the club organisers (the semi pro guys) asked me if I would like to go to a BIG national meeting way down south in Malvern. I asked my dad and with a bit of prompting he said "why not".
   When we got to that meeting we found there were around a hundred competitors, with ten groups of ten. I was in group "H". a two of my friends went down with us and they were in group "I" so were on just before me.
