Traxxas Slash 4x4 Ultimate TSM LiPo (2016) - 6809L-3 - Radio Controlled Model

   Introduced by Traxxas in 2016, the 4WD Slash 4x4 Ultimate TSM LiPo version Short Course Truck - # 6809L-3 - with their new Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) system, developed to make it easier to control the vehicle on slippery tracks, and came with a choice of four officially licensed Replica bodyshell options, namely - Mike Jenkins Edition (Traxxas #47), Mark Jenkins Edition (Traxxas #25), Scott Douglas Edition (AMSOIL) and Greg Adler Edition (4 Wheel Parts).

   Fully assembled RTR, the model included a Velineon 3500 Brushless Motor, VXL-3s ESC, TQi 2.4GHz Bluetooth Radio System, 5800Mah LiPo Battery, EZ-Peak Plus 4-amp NiMH/LiPo Fast Charger and BFGoodrich or Kumho Tires (dependant on bodyshell version).

   The 4WD model is shaft driven, on a molded plastic chassis, with front and rear gear type differentials, silicone-filled central differential, coil spring over Big Bore alloy dampers, with titanium-nitride shafts, blue anodized alloy front and rear axle carriers and c-hubs, front and rear sway bars, universal joint drive-shafts, slipper clutch and a full set of ball bearings.

   To get the best from the Traxxas Slash 4x4, it needs to be fine tuned, to provide precise steering response and improve grip when cornering, so you don't slide off the track. My First National

   When I first started in RC, way back in the late 1980s, I would turn up to the weekly club meeting, with my Tamiya Boomerang, Acoms transmitter, two sets of crystals, a couple of 7.2v batteries, a charger and a tool box with a wheel spanner and a few spares.
   It was three five minute qualifying rounds and a final, and every month we would have a trophy meeting. The trophies were donated by a two of the older semi professional guys who basically ran the club and over the years had collected what must have been hundreds of trophies and had no space for them anymore. The lure of a trophy always brought out the "not as enthusiastic types" and the small church function room was always packed on those nights.
   About a year in, my collection of B final trophies was beginning to clutter my room, and my dad bought me the new Tamiya Manta Ray. That was the big turning point in my RC career.
   From then on it was A finals all the way. Then one day in the summer of 1992 the club organisers (the semi pro guys) asked me if I would like to go to a BIG national meeting way down south in Malvern. I asked my dad and with a bit of prompting he said "why not".
   When we got to that meeting we found there were around a hundred competitors, with ten groups of ten. I was in group "H". a two of my friends went down with us and they were in group "I" so were on just before me.

Wheel Caster Explained

   Caster is basically the angle the steering kingpins or steering pivot points, leans back in relation to the horizontal when viewed from the side of the chassis.

   To test the effectiveness of your cars caster, place your model on a flat surface, point the front wheels straight ahead, and push the chassis over to one side to simulate body roll when cornering. You will notice that as the car leans over, all four wheels also lean over in the same direction. Tires provide the most grip when the wheels are perfectly vertical and the full width of each tire is flat on the ground. Body roll pushes the wheels past the vertical and reduces the amount of tire contact. Now, if you turn the front wheels as if cornering, and again push the chassis over, you will see that in this position, the front wheels are now more vertical, giving you better ground contact and therefore improved grip.

   Another effect of caster can be seen by disconnecting your steering servo and pushing your car along the floor. Because of caster and the kingpins leaning back, your car will naturally roll straight ahead.

   Obviously, the more body roll your car induces, the more positive caster you need to counter it.
